speaker

Patrik Lechner is a digital art pioneer and a key figure in the TouchDesigner community. Based in Austria, he works at the intersection of real-time audiovisual systems, procedural generation, and creative coding education.
He started out in experimental music as a teenager, eventually mastering tools like Max/MSP, Reaktor, and Pure Data before falling in love with TouchDesigner. His work blends live improvisation, custom software systems, and deep audio-visual integration β always guided by a strong sense of aesthetic logic.
Patrik is the author of the first comprehensive book on Max/MSP and TouchDesigner, published by Packt in 2014. He currently works as a researcher and lecturer at the Institute for Creative Media Technology in Austria, where he explores generative systems and shares his process through academic writing and technical tutorials.
Key highlights:
β Author of Multimedia Programming Using Max/MSP and TouchDesigner
β Creator of open-source tools like RayMarch Toolkit and MFCC for TouchDesigner
β Active workshop leader and instructor at Music Hackspace
β Performer and visual artist behind works like RT3, F-Sult, Don't Starve, and the digital opera Pandora
β Regular contributor to the TouchDesigner community via meetups, forums, and GitHub
With over a decade of experience in generative art and real-time visual environments, Patrikβs practice stands at the edge of technology and expression. His work inspires artists, educators, developers, and researchers worldwide.
What to Expect from the Stream
Patrik is a key figure in the TouchDesigner world β an artist, creative technologist, and the author of the first comprehensive guide to Max/MSP and TouchDesigner.
In this stream, he will talk about:
β His journey from experimental music to real-time visual systems
β How TouchDesigner became his main tool β and creative playground
β Artistic works, from generative installations to a digital opera
β His teaching, research, and open-source projects
β And the new course weβre about to launch together
Whether you're an artist, coder, performer, or educator β this talk is for you.
Patrik Lechner is one of the most thoughtful voices in the world of generative audiovisual art. Known equally for his poetic sensibility and technical fluency, he bridges the gap between sound and image, code and composition, research and performance. This live session will be a rare chance to dive deep into his approach β both philosophical and practical.
Weβll explore how Patrik moved from experimental electronic music into building his own systems for audiovisual expression. You'll hear about the tools he creates, the reasons behind his open-source projects, and how he thinks about real-time performance in the age of code-based media.
β What it means to build your own tools as an artist
β How procedural generation and improvisation coexist in his work
β The hidden logic behind projects like RT3, Don't Starve, or Pandora
β What teaching creative coding has taught him
β How TouchDesigner became not just a software, but a way of thinking
This stream is not a tutorial or portfolio review. Itβs a conversation with someone who has shaped the creative coding landscape through a decade of work, thought, and public sharing.
Whether you are just starting out with TouchDesigner or are building complex generative systems, Patrik's perspective will challenge, inspire, and likely shift the way you see your own creative process.
